Now, you might be accustomed to tuning in to Kiss FM and hearing the delightful Charlie Hedges on the breakfast show. But, what you might not realise is that alongside her journalistic broadcast skills, Charlie is dominating every aspect of the music scene by rapidly rising to the top of her game with both DJ’ing and producing.
Charlie’s no stranger to festivals having played the likes of V Festival, Wireless and the Isle of White Festival. However, if you’re more acquainted with the beaches of Ibiza than you are the fields of Essex, you might have caught her playing the Space opening party alongside Carl Cox back in 2013.
With a recent release on Aramada Deep and an upcoming appearance at BIG Festival, Charlie has gone from strength to strength and we had the absolute pleasure of catching up with her before her big appearance in Suffolk on June 25th.
Hi Charlie, thanks for taking the time to chat. Millions of people have listened to you on the breakfast show and now millions of people are going to get the opportunity to see you live. Where did your DJ career start?
Hey guys thanks for having me! So basically I applied for a job as a freelance journalist for a magazine when I was 13, they gave me the job for the cheek of being so young and asking! I started contacting celebs’ PA’s and blagging interviews – one was with a DJ on a radio station called Kiss FM at the time. From there I used to do work experience all the time at the station and various other newspapers, both national and local.
When I started uni to study for a BA in journalism they offered me a full time job at the same time at the station, which was amazing, so I did both. It’s here I taught myself to DJ and then I began to fulfil my passion of becoming a DJ and playing all over the world.
What’s been the high point in your DJ career so far?
Definitely playing the Space opening party in Ibiza when a sit down was started by people in the crowd! Before I knew it the whole room was on the floor getting ready to jump at the drop, it was crazy and I’ll never forget it.
So you’re playing at BIG Festival in Mildenhall, but, are you much of a festival girl yourself? Do you love to going to them or is a holiday in Ibiza more your thing?
Yes! I love festivals, anything with house music and music in general and I’m there be it festival, Ibiza or clubs. Festivals are insane in that you can play to thousands of people all at once and unite everyone by music, I love it.
Who were you early influences and passions with producing and DJ’ing?
Early influences have always been the likes of Sander Van Doorn and Michael Woods for their productions. More recently; Tough Love, DJ S.K.T, and Oliver Heldens. I’d also have to say Steve Aoki for his all-round performance and showmanship skills, he’s amazing.
You’ve got your debut single signed to Armada Deep, congratulations! Can you sum up your personal sound in three words for us?
Bassy, Bumpy, House.
What’s one track that never gets old no matter how many times you play / hear it?
You’re Not Alone. Sander Van Doorn’s new remix of it makes me go cold, it’s such a tune!
If you could do a b2b with any artist / DJ who would it be and why?
Sander Van Doorn, he’s a massive inspiration to me as a DJ and producer and I’d love to play alongside him for sure.
When and where was the first time you ever got up onto the decks and in front of a crowd?
It was a few years ago in a small bar in Kent, I was sooooo scared playing my first ever set but once it was finished and I stopped sweating I sat back and knew this was everything I’d ever wanted and I never looked back
Lots of DJ’s have had famous blunders whilst playing, what’s been the worst thing that’s happened to you?
At a festival actually, Mark Knight’s tour manager at the time came on stage as Mark was playing after me and he started setting up for him but pulled my USB out by accident…dead silence in a festival of a good few thousand people…embarrassing but I’m just glad they all knew it wasn’t me.
What can we expect from you in the future? Have you started to think about a Charlie Hedges 2017 tour yet? Is there a residency anywhere in the pipeline? Now that you’ve got producing under your belt, can we expect an EP?
Definitely thinking about a 2017 tour, would love to explore further afield too so in the US and more of Europe. An EP would be amazing too, I’m working 24/7 on new music and can’t wait to show you even more. Before then I have Ibiza gigs, Malia residencies, Mallorca, festivals and more UK dates before the end of the year which I can’t wait for. Thanks for taking the time to chat with me and make sure you guys get to a gig soon!
